Kinja'd!!!

This is parked across from my hotel.

Just called in sick for work. Been up for hours with ...issues... that I suspect are from dinner last night. It tasted great but obviously didn’t agree with me. I really hate calling in, especially on a trip where I know I am inconveniencing literally hundreds of people.

That’s the nature of the high speed aluminum tubing industry, though. It’s illegal and unsafe for me to work sick, and the people behind me wouldn’t want me there the way I am now. My replacement will be on the way in a couple hours.  I’ve got a ton of sick time, this is what it’s for.

Guilt trips from myself are the worst.

Take it when you can.

I get a total of 8 weeks of vacation. with 2 years to roll over, he rest is use it or lose it. Last 5 years, I have let go off an average of 2-3 weeks each year.

perks? none really. Besides the fact that I can pick up the phone anytime and call in. I will still manage my projects in various phases spread over 6 locations.

I was off yesterday, because, well, I decided to take off and I had been on a project working 7 days a week 12 -14 hrs a day for the last 7 weeks.

Yesterday: I was on phone 8-11 times talking to a few critical (to me / my project ) people maki ng sure things were “happen ing”.

This year I am set to lose about 4 weeks of vacatio n.

I have to ask: why are you willingly giving up a month of vacation time? If they give it to you, you should use it. Does it have to be in one week blocks, or could you just take a vacation day every Friday?

I can tak e an hour o ff, I can take a day off. I don’ t think I’ll ever be able to o take a compete week off. LOL.

Do I do it willingly ? I could say that’s partly true.

Mainly because of my projects. I am in Management.

Some ar e in engineering phase - Can be handled remotely / contractor’s o ffice .

Some are in Procurement - Can be handled remotely.

Some are in Construction - I am responsible for all aspects of the project, from safety to execution to schedule and budget. A lot (most) of these happen to be in process units.

I am also emergency response team member. work truck actually has strobes and I am in the roster as one of the people allowed in restricted zones in the event of things going down. Think Hurricane Harvey or think fire or gas release in a unit .

I also happen to be p art of the ERT and when things go south, I, at times, get called in as part of the Emergency Services.

My boss and super boss have re cogniz ed my (and everyone’s) effort and they occasionally reward / award us. To the level of getting couple grand in paycheck occasionally (every few months) . Occasionally (twice a year or so) they’d reward 2-5% stock as r eward for getting “stuff” done safe ly / on time . Do I expect it? No. I am salary - so I work for a fixed number. plus bonus. plus perks.

Of course, I can show up at work anyti me - as long as I have a grip on things - n o one cares when I log in. Management. 9 AM or 6 AM and what ti me I leave 2PM or 4 PM or 7 PM. Although I have spent more than 12 hrs consistently for the last 2 mon ths.

I do miss spending time with my kids though.

That time off with your family is valuable. Maybe next year make a constant effort to take half days on Fridays more often ( or whatever day is most feasible/useful).

If it's absolutely impossible to take more time off, it might be time to have a conversation with your bosses. Because either you are so integral to the operation that you using your earned vacation would be a serious problem for the company, or you should be taking that vacation time. So while they can't technically pay you out for a vacation, perhaps you can use it as a bargaining chip for a raise. I mean you are walking away from an entire month off of work in earned vacation time. Shouldn't that be worth something to them?

I ’d give you this: everything you posted, is true and cor rect.

It’s funny, I say that, for me the best day to take off is W ednesday since I end up working weekends a lot and my wife being a doctor has easier F ridays.

As re gards me being integral to the process: I have a   $45M project, I am 120% responsible for.. an d I have a few $100k - $ 200 k projects where I am 200% responsible for. And a whole lot of project between the aforementioned range.

Yes, they have promoted me a few times in last 5 years. I have seen my bonus get mu ltipli ed with hi gher than expected factor

But Family > *.
